A 12 page bundle chock full of coping skills ideas for your child of any age.
In this 12 page bundle you will find a variety of coping skills ideas for your child of any age. These coping skills are great to use for a brain break during online learning, when excitement levels get too high or even when your little one is experiencing big emotions. I recommend using these coping skills and visuals as a reminder until your child internalizes the coping skills themselves.
Remember the end game of self-regulation is your child being able to say, “I feel ____. I need _____.” It means they are able to identify and name their emotion and also think through what they might need to help themselves.
You will know they have internalized a specific coping skill when they do not rely on the visual and have the idea on their own. They might say this while doing homework, “I’m so frustrated. I’m going to take a break and get a cold glass of water.” (Bingo! Positively reinforce this!! This is now a generalized coping skill and they no longer rely on reminders or visuals for this one!)
Have fun with your child while they try new coping skills. Some are fun and worth a laugh and some really call for them to take a moment alone. Please remember everyone’s coping skills are different and every body reacts differently. Some kids might love deep pressure of pressing on a wall, another kid might think that’s a silly idea! Help your child find what feels right for THEIR body. The gift of self-regulation is a huge gift. I commend you for supporting your child through this process.
Enjoy!
